The world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat was inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday. Taking a major decision on this occasion, the stadium was also renamed. The stadium, which was earlier named the Sardar Patel Stadium, and more popularly known as the Motera Stadium, has been renamed after the Prime Minister, who was also formerly a president of the Gujarat Cricket Association. 

At the inauguration ceremony of the revamped stadium Home Minister Amit Shah, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and BCCI secretary Jay Shah were also present at the event. This stadium with a capacity of 1 lakh 10 thousand spectators has all kinds of modern facilities.

Let us tell you, the old Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat was completely demolished in 2015.  Subsequently, construction again was started in 2017 and was renamed Sardar Patel Stadium (Motera Stadium) with state-of-the-art facilities and high capacity.

The stadium, built in 1982, by the Gujarat Cricket Association, previously had a seating capacity of 53000 spectators, but now the capacity has increased to 1.10 lakh in the new stadium. That means so many people will be able to sit here and watch the match. Now, this becomes the highest seating capacity stadium surpassing Melbourne.

Highlights of the new stadium
  • The stadium is spread over 63 acres, with three entry gates.
  • 3 practice grounds, a clubhouse, an Olympic size swimming pool and an indoor cricket academy have also been built in the world’s biggest stadium.
  •  The structure of the stadium is designed in a way that whenever a player hits the boundary, every spectator sitting in the stadium can see that boundary.
  •  It is the only stadium in the world to use the same soil for practice and centre pitch. Here, the LED light is installed on the roof in the full dome for better visibility and omission of shadows.
  • The world’s largest cricket stadium has 11 centre pitches, it is the only stadium in the world with 11 centre pitches on the main ground.
  • It is the world’s first cricket stadium with four world-class dressing rooms including a gym.
  • Also, 76 corporate boxes with a capacity of 25 people have been built.
  • Separate arrangements have been made for entry and exit at the stadium.
  • Here sand has been used under the grass in the field,   which helps in draining the water after heavy rain. Here even after heavy rain match can be restarted in a few hours.
  • Car and scooter parking is provided, with a provision of parking of 4 thousand cars and 10 thousand two-wheelers.
  • A metro line has also been brought near the stadium.
Matches on this ground

 A total of 23 international matches have been held at the old stadium, including five World Cup matches. The 2011 World Cup quarter-final between India and Australia was also played here.

Historical moments on this ground
  •  Sunil Gavaskar had completed his ten thousand Test runs here.
  • Kapil Dev took his 432nd Test wicket On this ground.
  •  Sachin Tendulkar scored his first double century of Test cricket on this ground.
  •  It was here that Sachin completed his 20 years of international cricket and 30,000 international runs.
  •  AB de Villiers scored his first double century in Test against India here.
